A Novice's Guide to Doubling in Backgammon

When you decide to play Backgammon, one of the first things that you should strive to work on is the handling of the doubling cube. Learning how to use it is an important step in your training as a Backgammon player.

A lot of players do not like to use the cube, partly because they are afraid to double the stakes, and also because they do not have a proper Backgammon strategy. The last point is important; without a viable plan you will never be certain when to use or hold the cube, so it is important to keep the following in mind when playing.

The first is that you have the option to redouble. Depending on whether it is a money or match play, you can tender the redouble on your subsequent dice roll, or beaver him (i.e., redouble immediately). However, before you make the offer, you should take into account the situation on the Backgammon board.

If you make a mistake and are certain that the opponent will attempt to use the doubling cube soon, try to remedy the situation. As an example: if your blots get hits, you must try to take your remaining checkers and establish anchors, or if they are clustered together, construct a prime. That may make him think twice about doubling.

If you are being hit constantly, then you may want to go on the offensive, notwithstanding the risks. The reason is that if you are going to be doubled, and you do not want to drop, then do your best to weaken your opponent too.

Other facts about the Backgammon double you should keep in mind: suppose you are winning late in the game and holding the cube, but make a few mistakes and allow your opponent to come closer. Do not offer the cube just to regain your original lead, because that could be disaster.

Wait for the proper opportunity to present itself; remember that when you offer the doubling cube and it is taken, you lose control of it, and that can turn the momentum of the Backgammon game easily. If you are going to relinquish control, then make sure that you make it count by increasing your lead.

The point being emphasized here is that in Backgammon, you cannot be concerned with what you are just doing, but also ponder the actions of your opponent. Also take into account the moves you are currently making, and how they fit into the greater scheme of things.

There a lot of things that a new player must learn about the Backgammon double, but these are enough to get you started. The best way to gain more knowledge is to go out and play, and soon enough, you will know the ins and outs of using the cube.
